Abstract

This article examines the presence of allergens in personal care products (PCPs) marketed as "hypoallergenic" from two major UK retailers in 2022, focusing on ingredients listed in the British Society of Cutaneous Allergy (BSCA) baseline series. The study found that 73.6% of 208 tested products contained at least one potential allergen or related chemical, with fragrance (parfum) being the most common, followed by cetearyl alcohol in leave-on products and parabens in rinse-off products. The term "hypoallergenic" is not regulated by industry standards, and the findings suggest that such marketing does not reliably indicate a lower risk of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The article highlights the need for increased awareness among consumers and healthcare professionals regarding the allergenic potential of these products despite their labeling.
