Abstract
This study analyzed e-mail marketing communications from 13 online e-cigarette retailers in California with physical vape shops and active websites, collecting 749 promotional e-mails over one year (November 2021–November 2022). The e-mails predominantly promoted second-generation and disposable e-cigarettes, often featuring fruit, sweet, liquor, menthol, and concept flavors, and included online coupons, store locators, and links to social media pages. Health warnings appeared in about half of the e-mails, while age warnings were rare (8%). The findings highlight how e-cigarette retailers use e-mail marketing to promote products and discounts, suggesting a need for further research on the impact of such digital marketing on e-cigarette use, particularly among gender and ethnic minorities.
