Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Thessaly in Greece explores the use of manipulative materials in teaching mathematics to students with Asperger syndrome. The study focuses on a 14-year-old student with Asperger syndrome in the 8th grade of a high school in Greece and examines the student's understanding of proportional quantities and the illusion of linearity in mathematical problems. The research concludes that the student was able to differentiate between real analogies and the illusion of linearity when using manipulatives. The study provides suggestions, perspectives, and limitations for teaching proportion problems and addressing the illusion of proportionality using manipulatives. [Extracted from the article]
