Abstract

The article focuses on the ecological recovery and sustainable tourism developments on Kangaroo Island following the devastating 2019-2020 bushfires that burned half the island and severely impacted native wildlife, including koalas and the sooty dunnart. Conservation efforts involve community participation and visitor engagement through private tours and research activities aimed at monitoring endangered species like Australian sea lions. Additionally, new eco-friendly accommodations have been introduced, featuring solar power and rainwater harvesting, while the Southern Ocean Lodge has reopened with off-grid suites designed to withstand future fires. These initiatives highlight a combined commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable tourism on the island.
