Abstract
A team of researchers led by scientist Erin Easton discovered over 150 new species living on and around a chain of underwater mountains called seamounts. The team conducted two expeditions on the Schmidt Ocean Institute's research vessel, Falkor, to map and explore the Salas y Gómez and Nazca Ridges. They found diverse communities of organisms, including ancient corals, sea urchins, sea stars, brittle stars, squat lobsters, and more. The researchers used sonar to map the seafloor and a remotely operated vehicle named SuBastian to explore the depths and collect samples. The discoveries highlight the importance of protecting these ecosystems, particularly in international waters. [Extracted from the article]
