Abstract
The challenge is to propose a metapsychology which integrates the infinite-- seen as the endless capacity for transformation of psychic reality--while taking in consideration the self-preservation and the sexual death and life drives. De M'Uzan's concept of the vital-identital moves self-preservation to a psychic terrain of identity separate from the order of the sexual. This metapsychology would encompass the different aspects of the unconscious, particularly that of the unconscious ego in its elaborative and generative scope. The interventions of the analyst as ethical subject--that is, the ethical--allowing a negotiation between the vital-identital and the sexual, can reactivate a weakened life instinct.
