COVID‐19 Lockdown Pandemic Period Effects in Highly Impacted Aquatic Ecosystems.

Abstract

This article focuses on evaluating the effects of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions on highly impacted aquatic ecosystems in central Italy, specifically the lower Tiber River near Rome and two transitional coastal waters in southern Latium. Despite reductions in anthropogenic activities during the 2020–2021 lockdown period, analyses of chemical, biological, and microbiological parameters showed no significant improvement in water quality or ecological status compared to data collected from 2002 to 2015. The study attributes the persistent eutrophication, organic pollution, and high microbiological contamination primarily to ongoing urban sewage discharge and agricultural pressures, indicating that temporary activity restrictions were insufficient to mitigate long-term environmental impacts on these ecosystems.
