Abstract
The article focuses on how cities worldwide are responding to increasingly frequent and severe heat waves exacerbated by human-caused climate change. It highlights that extreme heat, which now kills more people in the U.S. than any other weather-related disaster, is prompting cities like Miami and Phoenix to appoint chief heat officers to coordinate mitigation efforts. Various urban strategies include creating cooling centers, planting trees, reflective surfaces, early warning systems, and heat wave naming to better manage resources and protect vulnerable populations. The article emphasizes the importance of long-term, coordinated urban planning to address the growing public health and infrastructure challenges posed by extreme heat.
