Abstract
The commentary on firearms examination validation studies by Gutierrez and Prokesch highlights a study involving lay people shown images of microscopic toolmarks on fired cartridge cases. The authors point out errors in Gutierrez's study and raise concerns about the comparison between laypersons and expert examiners. They argue that there are significant differences in the ability of examiners and laypersons to make conclusions about same-source and different-source samples, challenging Gutierrez's assertion that their performance is indistinguishable. The authors emphasize the importance of expertise in firearms examination and question the validity of Gutierrez's conclusions. [Extracted from the article]
