Abstract
The article focuses on the stalled Western effort to reduce Europe's dependence on Russian oil and gas two and a half years into Russia's war in Ukraine. Despite sanctions and partial embargoes by the U.S., U.K., and E.U., Europe continues to import significant amounts of Russian energy, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), which has allowed Russia to maintain strong economic growth and fund its military operations. This ongoing reliance has weakened Western geopolitical influence, complicated foreign policy goals, and contributed to environmental setbacks, while Ukraine faces severe humanitarian consequences due to energy infrastructure destruction. The article highlights the lack of political will to fully isolate Russia from global energy markets despite the war's devastating impact.
