Abstract

This article focuses on the reintegration experiences of long-distance hikers after completing the Appalachian Trail (AT), a nearly 2,200-mile footpath in the United States. Using narrative inquiry with seven participants who completed a continuous thru-hike, the study highlights common emotional challenges such as post-trail depression, culture shock, and difficulties reconnecting with non-hiking communities. It identifies key reintegration strategies including maintaining contact with trail friends, gradually re-entering daily life, preserving trail-inspired practices, and embracing personal growth that may alter post-hike values. The authors propose that hikers develop a deliberate reintegration plan to ease the transition and offer recommendations for experiential educators working with outdoor adventure participants facing similar post-experience adjustments.
