Determination of internal gamma dose assessment due to natural radioactivity for river sand using a gamma-ray spectrometer.

Abstract
This article focuses on measuring the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides—radium-226 (^226Ra), thorium-232 (^232Th), and potassium-40 (^40K)—in river sand samples from the Ponnai River in Tamil Nadu, India, using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometry. The study found mean activity concentrations of 31 Bq/kg for ^226Ra, 84 Bq/kg for ^232Th, and 416 Bq/kg for ^40K, with ^232Th and ^40K exceeding global average values while ^226Ra was below. Radiological hazard assessment using the radium equivalent activity (Raeq) index indicated that all samples, except one, were below the recommended safety limit of 370 Bq/kg, suggesting the sand is safe for use in building construction. The spatial distribution of radionuclides varied across the study area, reflecting geological differences.
