Abstract
This article focuses on a pilot study conducted at the Tamarind Forensic Secure Unit to evaluate the impact of physical activity on the mental and physical health of male Service Users (SUs) within a medium-secure forensic inpatient setting. The Physical Activity and Mental Health Awareness pilot study involved eight sessions over 13 weeks, combining various exercises with education on nutrition and mental wellbeing, facilitated by a multidisciplinary team including physical therapists and psychologists. Quantitative results showed improvements in mood, energy levels, and reductions in depression scores, while qualitative feedback highlighted increased understanding of the link between physical and mental health and enjoyment of the activities. The study underscores the importance of integrating physical health monitoring and activity into forensic mental health care, recommending further research with larger samples and culturally tailored interventions.
