Abstract

The article focuses on the inaugural Global electronic Competition on Astronomy and Astrophysics (GeCAA), held online in September–October 2020 as a substitute for the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. GeCAA successfully engaged 325 students from over 42 countries in individual and team competitions covering theory, data analysis, and observational astronomy, while addressing challenges such as time zone differences, internet access, and academic integrity through innovative online solutions. The competition demonstrated a positive impact on participants' interest in astronomy and astrophysics and influenced subsequent IOAA events to incorporate online participation as a regular feature. The article also discusses the design principles, academic tasks, organizational lessons learned, and the competition's role in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in astronomy education.
