New class of 'ozone-safe' refrigerants may have unexpected downside.

Abstract
A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found that hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), a new class of chemical refrigerants used as a replacement for ozone-depleting substances, can produce fluoroform, a gas with a global warming potential 14,800 times worse than carbon dioxide. However, the actual implications of this discovery are still unclear, as the amount of fluoroform produced by HFOs is minimal compared to previous chemicals. HFOs have gained popularity due to their ability to break down in the atmosphere quickly and their low global warming potential.
