Abstract

Researchers have discovered a new type of magnetism that combines characteristics of both ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. This "altermagnetism" phenomenon has been predicted to exist in over 200 materials, and scientists are now working on experimental evidence to confirm its existence. Altermagnets have the potential to be used in more efficient electronic devices, as they possess the stability and fast spin-flipping speeds of antiferromagnets, while also allowing for easier memory writing like ferromagnets. Recent studies have provided evidence of altermagnetism in materials such as ruthenium dioxide and manganese telluride, but further research is needed to fully understand and harness this new type of magnetism.
