Abstract

The article focuses on the rich biodiversity of orchids within the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve (PHBR), which was designated under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme in September 2021. The PHBR is home to a variety of ecosystems and has a historical significance in botanical exploration, with notable figures contributing to the discovery of numerous orchid species. Recent research has identified a total of 201 orchid species in the reserve, including new records and rediscoveries, highlighting the resilience of certain species despite threats such as poaching and habitat destruction. Conservation efforts, including education for visitors and the role of the Penang Botanic Gardens, are emphasized as crucial for the protection of these native orchids. [Extracted from the article]
