Abstract
This article evaluates the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI, in the context of forensic science, crime investigation, and legal applications. Through experiments, it finds that ChatGPT provides general and often incomplete or inaccurate information on forensic investigations, including fabricated references, making it unreliable for professional use in these fields. The study also highlights ethical and legal concerns, such as the potential misuse of ChatGPT by criminals and issues related to misinformation, data breaches, and privacy. The authors emphasize that human expertise remains essential in forensic and legal disciplines and call for the establishment of strict regulatory frameworks and ethical guidelines to govern the use of AI tools like ChatGPT.
