BACKGROUND RADIATION MEASUREMENTS AND CANCER RISK ESTIMATES FOR ŞEBINKARAHISAR, TURKEY.

Abstract

This article focuses on the measurement and assessment of natural and artificial environmental radioactivity in the Şebinkarahisar district, a uranium–thorium-rich area in Giresun, Turkey. It reports activity concentrations of radionuclides uranium-238 (^238U), thorium-232 (^232Th), potassium-40 (^40K), and cesium-137 (^137Cs) in soil and rock samples, alongside gamma dose rates, indoor radon (^222Rn) levels, and radioactivity in tap water from 73 soil, 50 rock, and 30 dwelling samples. The study found that radionuclide concentrations and gamma dose rates in the region exceed global averages, with indoor radon levels and radon in drinking water also above recommended limits, leading to calculated excess lifetime cancer risks (ELCR) higher than typical background levels. Radiological maps were produced to visualize spatial distributions, and the data contribute to a baseline for future environmental and health risk assessments related to natural radioactivity in the area.
