Abstract

The article focuses on the unique ecosystem surrounding hydrothermal vents, which are openings on the seafloor that release mineral-rich, heated water. These vents, categorized as "black smokers" or "white smokers" based on the temperature and mineral content of their plumes, host a variety of extremophiles—organisms that thrive in extreme conditions. Notable inhabitants include the Yeti crab, which cultivates bacteria on its claws for food; siboglinid tube worms, which absorb nutrients from symbiotic bacteria; and the ghost fish, a rare, translucent species. Other fascinating creatures mentioned are sea spiders, scaly-foot snails, sea cucumbers, and bigfin squid, each adapted to survive in the harsh environment of thermal vents.
