Abstract

According to US Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer, an agreement for Hamas to release hostages taken during its attack on Israel in October is closer than ever before. The deal would require a multiday pause in the fighting in Gaza. Negotiations have reached a sensitive stage, with significant progress made in recent days and hours. A prisoner exchange involving Israel is among the topics being discussed. President Joe Biden has supported Israel in opposing a cease-fire with Hamas, but a pause in the fighting would allow hostages to be safely moved and provide an opportunity for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza residents. The US also urges Israel to avoid civilian casualties as it pursues Hamas's leadership. Qatar has been mediating in the hostage talks, and while there is no deal yet, progress is being made. The Biden administration is also considering banning "extremist" settlers who attack Palestinians in the West Bank from obtaining US visas. [Extracted from the article]
