Abstract

Malawi has achieved its first successful large-scale harvest of wheat after years of searching for a suitable variety for its soil. This is seen as a solution to mitigate the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on grain imports to Africa. The CEO of Pyxus Agriculture Limited, Ronald Ngwira, stated that about four varieties of wheat have been found suitable for Malawian soil out of 80 varieties tried since 2019. Wheat farming is expected to produce about 90 metric tons, which is 50% of the country's wheat consumption. [Extracted from the article]
