Abstract

The article discusses the increasing demand for hard disk drives (HDDs) and the potential shift towards quad-level cell solid-state drives (QLC SSDs) due to supply shortages. According to TrendForce, nearline HDDs, which are used for infrequently accessed data, are experiencing severe shortages driven by the AI boom, leading companies like Western Digital to implement price increases and extend lead times for high-capacity HDDs to nearly one year. As cloud service providers seek alternatives, they may turn to QLC SSDs, which, while faster and more power-efficient than HDDs, are also more expensive and currently less performant than triple-level cell (TLC) SSDs. The article suggests that while consumer SSDs may not be directly impacted, the interconnected nature of the storage market could lead to higher prices and reduced availability in the future.
