Abstract
Mendel did not attend the conference because he was teaching; however, Dzierzon was lodging at the abbey while Mendel was living there. Hugo Iltis (1932), Mendel's biographer, suggested a source: "Mendel, one may presume, was acquainted with a hypothesis which at this time was being hotly debated among beekeepers, one propounded in 1854 by the Silesian parish priest Dzierzon" (Fig. A Society of Beekeepers To test Iltis' claim that Dzierzon's research influenced Mendel, it is necessary to determine whether Napp or Mendel knew about Dzierzon's research and when they became aware of it.
