Abstract

This study examines the role of social media in shaping competing narratives during the 2020–2022 Ethiopian civil war, focusing on the #NoMore campaign launched by Ethiopian diaspora activists in North America to oppose Western intervention in Ethiopia's internal affairs. Utilizing qualitative methods including interviews and social media analysis, the study finds that #NoMore supporters used platforms like Twitter to organize protests, fundraising, and counter Western media portrayals, framing their movement within Pan-Africanist discourse. In response, activists aligned with the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) initiated the #KnowMore campaign to highlight alleged atrocities against Tigreans and challenge the #NoMore narrative. The research highlights social media as a contested space where diasporic and local actors engage in discursive battles that influence international perceptions and mobilize global support for conflicting sides in the war.
