Abstract

The article from BAVUAL: The African Heritage Magazine explores the Prosperity Gospel, a religious movement that promises believers financial success, health, and happiness as divine gifts. The movement's origins can be traced back to the intersection of Pentecostalism, New Thought, and American pragmatism in the 18th and 19th centuries. While the Prosperity Gospel has faced criticism for its materialistic focus and exploitation, it continues to be popular due to its appeal to desires for material success, physical and mental relief, simplistic solutions, self-help ideologies, and charismatic preacher personalities. The article also highlights the mystery of why the Prosperity Gospel appeals to some Black individuals, despite mainstream evangelical black Christians viewing it with disdain.
