Abstract

This article examines the working conditions of Mexican federal truck and bus drivers and their association with fatigue and sleep disorders (SD). Using a cross-sectional study of 172 drivers and validated instruments including the Survey Evaluation and Monitoring of Workers Health (PROESSAT) and the Yoshitake Fatigue questionnaire, the research found that night work and hazardous tasks significantly increased the prevalence of sleep disorders, while poor lighting and payment by trip or mileage were linked to higher fatigue levels. Positive work factors such as developing skills, having supportive coworkers, and control over work schedules were associated with reduced prevalence of these disorders. The study highlights the impact of long shifts, strenuous effort, exposure to crime, and limited rest on drivers’ health, suggesting interventions like improved sleep hygiene education and shift organization to mitigate risks.
