Fixing a Self-Sabotaging Team.

Abstract

The article focuses on identifying and addressing dysfunctional behaviors in work teams under pressure, which often regress into pathological patterns that hinder their effectiveness. It outlines four common dysfunctional dynamics: reliance on a sole savior, dependence on a dynamic duo, fight mode (blaming an external enemy), and flight mode (avoidance and withdrawal). These patterns arise as unconscious coping mechanisms to collective anxiety and can sabotage a team's mission. The authors recommend using sociograms—visual maps of team relationships and interactions—as a diagnostic tool to reveal hidden tensions, roles, and communication patterns, enabling teams to recognize and overcome self-sabotaging behaviors and improve collaboration.
