Abstract
The article focuses on the use of technology-based concept mapping as a prewriting strategy to support students with high-incidence disabilities in brainstorming and organizing ideas for written expression. Concept maps visually represent connections between ideas and can be created using various software and web-based tools, which offer features such as spell check, speech-to-text, image insertion, and hyperlinking to enhance accessibility and usability. A secondary special education teacher, Mr. Jones, implements the Inspiration software with his students, noting improvements in content specificity, organization, and writing efficiency. The article emphasizes the importance of explicit instruction in both concept mapping and technology use to maximize benefits, while also noting free or low-cost alternatives for schools with limited resources.
