The Immediate Perceived and Physiological Stress-Lowering Effect of Slow-Paced Breathing in Daily Life.

Abstract

The article focuses on a study examining the immediate effects of slow-paced breathing (SPB) techniques on managing acute stress in daily life. Conducted over four days with 67 moderately stressed students, the study utilized a micro-randomized design to prompt participants to practice 5-minute guided SPB sessions. Results indicated that SPB significantly lowered perceived stress levels compared to control times, and participants who perceived SPB as more natural experienced greater stress reduction. The findings suggest that SPB may be beneficial for immediate stress relief, highlighting the importance of making the technique feel natural for enhanced effectiveness in stress management interventions.
