Abstract

This article focuses on a prospective study examining how illness perceptions and coping processes interact to predict depressive symptoms one year after diagnosis of uveal melanoma (UM), a rare eye cancer affecting about 5 per million adults annually. The study found that perceptions of illness chronicity (beliefs about how long the illness will last), but not perceptions of control, significantly moderated the relationship between coping styles and later depressive symptoms. Specifically, higher approach-oriented coping was associated with fewer depressive symptoms among individuals with prolonged chronicity perceptions, while avoidance-oriented coping showed a less reliable association with increased depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that assessing chronicity perceptions and promoting approach-oriented coping early in UM survivorship may help identify and support patients at risk for depression.
