Abstract

The book *Quebec Cinema in the 21st Century: Transcending the National* examines the evolving landscape of Quebec filmmaking, highlighting how contemporary Quebec cinema has expanded beyond traditional cultural and linguistic boundaries. It features essays and interviews that explore the inclusion of Indigenous peoples, immigrants from North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, and greater gender parity among creators, reflecting the province's diverse population. The collection also discusses the international recognition of Quebec filmmakers and the use of multiple languages in film production, while maintaining a distinct Quebec identity termed "Québécité." The works analyzed range from commercially successful genres to auteur films addressing themes such as Indigenous collaboration, immigrant experiences, and LGBTQ+ issues.
