Abstract

The article discusses how communities in the American West used Civil War memory to craft an identity and narrative suitable to their region. Topics discussed include the Westerners' use of the memory of the war to fit their region's unique experience and history, direct connections between the mythology of settler colonialism in the West and Lost Cause narratives in the South and how the Civil War and its aftermath remain embedded in the narratives of communities about their history.
