Abstract

This article focuses on Benjamin Gibson, a Newcastle-born surgeon and the first specialist oculist in Manchester and the North of England, who made pioneering contributions to pediatric ophthalmology in the early 19th century. Trained in several British cities, Gibson developed expertise in eye diseases of children, notably publishing the first detailed account of the cause of ophthalmia neonatorum and advancing cataract surgery in infants. He served as Honorary Surgeon to the Manchester Infirmary and was recognized for his surgical skill, teaching, and instrument design before his early death in 1812. Gibson’s work laid foundational knowledge that influenced the establishment of dedicated ophthalmic services in Manchester shortly after his passing.
