Abstract

This article focuses on the challenges faced by women police officers in the St. Louis, Missouri metropolitan area, particularly regarding discrimination and work–life balance issues that affect their recruitment, advancement, and retention. Through in-depth interviews with 14 women officers, the study identifies both direct discrimination—such as denial of specialized training and career advancement—and indirect discrimination, including teasing, harassment, and elevated expectations. Participants described various coping strategies to manage these workplace stressors. The findings highlight the need for police departments to foster environments that promote not only gender representation but also gender equity.
