Abstract

This article examines the lived experiences of livelihood diversification among Maasai pastoralists in southern Kenya, focusing on three activities: small-scale fishing, crop farming, and small businesses. Using feminist political ecology insights and the participatory visual method photovoice, the study explores how these diversification processes reshape pastoralists’ subjectivities—how they understand themselves and their social positions—amid intersecting gender, age, wealth, and spatial relations. Findings reveal that diversification is non-linear and seasonally variable, often framed by participants as entrepreneurial efforts that complement rather than replace pastoral livestock keeping, thereby renegotiating Maasai identity. The research highlights the importance of recognizing diverse, context-specific experiences and social differentiations in adaptation planning to better align with local ambitions and avoid exacerbating inequalities.
