Abstract

The article stresses the need for comprehensive, timely city-level fatal and nonfatal firearm injury surveillance, citing a study which developed a data set on state-level estimates of nonfatal firearm injury hospitalizations in the U.S. between 2000 and 2021. It points out the failure of nonfatal firearm injury inpatient hospitalizations data to capture patients who suffer minor gunshot injuries and gunshot wound survivors who do not seek treatment. The risks of shooting injuries is discussed.
