Abstract

This article focuses on Dr. Nuri Fehmi Ayberk’s contributions to Turkish ophthalmology and the national fight against trachoma, a leading infectious cause of blindness caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Dr. Ayberk, a founding member of the Turkish Ophthalmological Association established in 1928, played a key role in organizing and leading Turkey’s vertical health program against trachoma from the 1930s, which significantly reduced the disease’s prevalence. His work included clinical leadership, international research, and authorship of important ophthalmology texts, notably "Trahom" (1927) and multiple editions of "Muhtasar Oftalmoloji" (Brief Ophthalmology). The article also highlights the historical context of trachoma in Turkey and the importance of preserving medical biographies and archival materials to document the legacy of physicians like Dr. Ayberk.
