Abstract
This article evaluates the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals New South Wales (RSPCA NSW) Domestic Violence Program, which supports victim–survivors of domestic and family violence (DFV) by providing temporary accommodation and care for their pets. Concern for animal safety often causes victims to delay leaving abusive situations, and the program enables clients and their children to access safe housing while maintaining their bond with their animals. Using social return on investment (SROI) methodology, the study found that for every AUD$1 invested, AUD$9.65 of social value was created through improved safety, mental and physical health, reduced financial stress, and enhanced well-being for clients, their children, and their animals. The findings highlight the importance of including pets in DFV services and advocate for greater interagency collaboration to support victim–survivors and their companion animals as a family unit.
