Abstract

This article, published in the American Journal on Addictions, discusses the recognition of behavioral addictions (BAs) as psychiatric diagnoses in the DSM-5 and ICD-11. The authors emphasize that BAs are often underdiagnosed and undertreated. While there are currently no FDA-approved medications for BAs, the article highlights various medications and behavioral approaches that can help patients. The symposium presented information on gambling disorder (GD), internet gaming disorder (IGD), problematic pornography use (PPU), and compulsive sexual behaviors. The article also explores the co-occurrence of BAs with other psychiatric disorders and provides screening tools and treatment options for BAs. The authors stress the importance of active screening for BAs in clinical settings and highlight the promising interventions and screening tools available for clinicians to assist their patients.
