Abstract

The article discusses new research on selective mutism (SM) and its co-occurrence with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Norway. Conducted using data from the Norwegian Patient Register, the study found that 11.7% of individuals diagnosed with SM also exhibited symptoms of autism, despite autism being excluded as a co-occurring diagnosis in European diagnostic manuals. The research highlights the potential for delayed or incorrect diagnoses, which can hinder early intervention and support for affected children. The study involved a sample of 1,682 individuals aged 3 to 18 years and was financially supported by Østfold University College. [Extracted from the article]
