Abstract

This article examines the Kū Kiaʻi Kahuku movement, an Indigenous-led environmental justice effort in Kahuku, Hawaiʻi, opposing the installation of massive industrial wind turbines near homes and schools. Using the Moanan (Pacific Islander) theoretical concepts of tā (marking time and space through rhythm and action) and vā (relational space), the research critiques Western social media frameworks by centering Indigenous knowledge to analyze how livestreaming fostered a civic rhythm that connected local protectors and the diaspora in reciprocal socio-spatial ties. The movement’s use of social media as "civic streaming" created affective digital spaces that reinforced Indigenous identity, solidarity, and resistance against colonial capitalism’s ecological and cultural impacts. This study highlights how Indigenous epistemologies can deepen understanding of digital activism and social media beyond Western paradigms, emphasizing the interweaving of tradition and modern technology in Indigenous struggles for land and sovereignty.
