Abstract

The article examines the lives and careers of the first two African American women physicians, Rebecca Lee Crumpler and Rebecca Cole, for a wider understanding of their history in medicine and public health. It describes efforts by Crumpler and Cole to address health inequality and racism. It discusses the lack of research and mentions in medical history literature of African American women physicians.
