A Digital Diabetes Storytelling Intervention for the Hmong Community: A Pilot Study.

Abstract

This article focuses on the development and evaluation of a culturally informed diabetes self-management education video tool using digital storytelling for Hmong-American patients, who experience higher rates of diabetes and poorer health outcomes compared to White peers. Created through a community-engaged process involving Hmong community members, the video addressed culturally relevant themes such as traditional foods and family engagement. In a pilot study at an academic clinic serving a large Hmong population, the video was found to be highly acceptable, with most participants identifying with the story and feeling motivated to change their behavior. The study suggests that culturally tailored digital storytelling may help overcome literacy and cultural barriers in diabetes education for Hmong communities, though further research with larger samples and outcome measures is needed.
