Abstract

This article focuses on research from Xi'an Jiaotong University in the People's Republic of China examining how directive leadership behavior is influenced by the interaction between leader and team psychological traits and team performance feedback. The study integrates adaptive leadership theory with trait-activation theory, proposing that a leader’s core self-evaluation (CSE) motivates directive behavior, which is moderated by aggregate team CSE and team past performance. Findings from a multi-source, three-wave field study involving 203 leaders and 1,520 team members indicate that directive leadership varies depending on team psychological resources and performance outcomes. This research advances leadership theory by detailing how leaders adjust directive behavior in response to team contexts. [Extracted from the article]
