Abstract

This article examines the determinants of fear of crime among international and national university students in Istanbul, Turkey, based on a 2019 survey of 377 international and 579 national students. It finds that international students primarily fear being cheated or conned, while national students are more concerned about physical attacks. Female international students report the highest levels of fear across all crime types compared to other groups. Key predictors of fear of crime include gender and perceived risk, with social incivilities influencing international students more than national students. The study highlights the importance of addressing fear of crime among international students in Turkey and suggests further research on their crime-related experiences, especially considering gender differences.
