Abstract
This scoping review examines empirical studies on Black American beauty standards, focusing primarily on hair, beauty ideals, and body image among Black women in the United States. Synthesizing 39 publications, the review identifies three main themes: the relationship to Eurocentric beauty standards, community influence, and intersectional approaches that consider race, gender, and class. Findings reveal that Black women's perceptions of beauty are fluid and context-dependent, shaped by intracultural standards as well as external societal pressures, with hair serving as a central site of identity and resistance. The review highlights gaps in research on skincare, cosmetics, and beauty routines, recommending future studies explore how Black American women's use of beauty products relates to their cultural ideals and lived experiences.
