Abstract

This article focuses on the story of the adulterous woman in John 7:53–8:11, emphasizing Jesus's wordless act of doodling on the ground rather than the content of what he wrote. It argues that Jesus's gestures, particularly his embodied, disruptive, and nonviolent doodling, reveal a distinctive ethical style that invites reflection on Christian ethics as a matter of form and presence rather than solely content or doctrine. The narrative's late addition to the Gospel of John underscores its role as a textual and ethical disruption, illustrating Jesus's openness to surprise, respect for self-determination, and embodiment of God's kingdom as a dynamic, unfolding reality. Ultimately, the article proposes that Christian discipleship involves continuing Jesus's improvisational "doodling" — creatively responding to ethical challenges in ways that embody his style of kingdom living.
