Abstract

This article discusses the issue of body image in the field of scientific research, specifically in the context of field work. The author highlights the challenges faced by individuals whose bodies do not conform to stereotypical notions of what a scientist should look like. These challenges include discriminatory attitudes, inappropriate comments, difficulty finding properly sized field attire, and feelings of exclusion and low self-esteem. The article emphasizes the importance of addressing body image issues in order to promote inclusivity and diversity in the scientific community. It also provides suggestions for promoting body positivity in the field, such as incorporating body image into sensitivity training, implementing weight-based protections in anti-discrimination policies, and using inclusive sizing for field gear. The article concludes by emphasizing that physical appearance does not determine scientific competency and calls for an intersectional approach to advocacy for body image issues.
