Abstract

The article focuses on Pui-Ying's impactful career in paediatric infectious diseases and mentorship during her time in Malawi from 2016 to 2024. She led the Paediatric and Child Health Group at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW), bridging clinical and research efforts with Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and Kamuzu University of Health Science. Pui-Ying was principal investigator for Malawi in the EMPIRICAL clinical trial, which studied infants with HIV and severe pneumonia across six sub-Saharan African countries, and she actively supported capacity building for young researchers. Known for her generous mentorship and financial support to a diverse range of healthcare staff, she emphasized career diversity and scientific contribution from low- and middle-income countries. Her unexpected passing is noted as a significant loss to the field of tropical paediatrics.
